Being a photographer is about much more than knowing how to use a camera.
There’s the creative side - developing your eye, finding your style, understanding light and telling stories through images. But for photographers working independently, there’s another side that often gets less attention: building a career around the craft.
Finding clients. Building a portfolio. Pricing your work. Managing projects. Meeting deadlines. Marketing yourself. Networking. Learning how to turn a passion for photography into something sustainable.
Being a freelance photographer means wearing a lot of hats.
The work behind the photograph
When we look at a finished photograph, we usually see the final image.
What we don't see is everything that came before it.
The conversations with a client. The creative decisions. The equipment. The location scouting. The editing. The late nights. The pitching. The uncertainty between projects.
For freelance photographers, the creative process doesn't stop when the shutter closes.
Building a sustainable career requires constantly developing both your craft and your understanding of the industry around it.
And sometimes, the best way to do that is to learn from people who are already doing the work.
Finding your perspective
Every photographer sees the world differently. Two people can photograph the same subject and walk away with completely different images. That's part of what makes photography so interesting — your perspective becomes part of your work.
Developing that perspective takes time.
It comes from experimenting, making mistakes, studying other photographers, having conversations and being exposed to ideas outside of your usual creative bubble.
For freelancers, that kind of learning can be especially valuable because much of the work happens independently.
You don't always have a team sitting next to you to bounce ideas off. Sometimes you have to actively create those opportunities for yourself.
Why community matters for freelancers
Being independent doesn't have to mean working in isolation.
There is something valuable about being in a room with other photographers and creatives who understand the realities of building something for yourself.
A conversation can introduce you to a new way of working.
A question can challenge the way you approach your craft.
A connection can become a collaboration.
And sometimes, simply hearing how another photographer navigated their career can give you a perspective you didn't know you needed.
That's why spaces created around learning and connection matter.
They give freelancers an opportunity to step away from the everyday hustle, exchange ideas and invest in the part of their career that doesn't always fit neatly into a deadline or client brief.
Making room for the conversation

That's why we're supporting a photo lecture in partnership with This Audio Is Visual (TAIV), led by Andy Mkosi, on 19 September at The Forge in Braamfontein.
The session will bring photographers and members of the creative community together around photography, visual practice and the stories behind the work.
It's not about having all the answers.
It's about being curious enough to ask better questions, being open to different perspectives and making space for conversations that could influence what you create next.
Beyond the frame
For freelance photographers, growth doesn't only happen when you're behind the camera.
It happens when you learn something new.
When you meet someone who sees things differently.
When a conversation changes how you approach your next shoot.
And sometimes, when you simply find yourself in a room full of people who are also figuring it out.
